🍄 “Using a Small Force to Move a Large Weight”

In February of this year, I visited Hong Kong, my mother’s homeland. As part of my trip, I met with two of my grandfather's students to learn more about him and their practice in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

“Using a Small Force to Move a Large Weight”

One concept that Ms. Lau learned from my grandfather and shared with me was about utilising small doses of medicine. This principle in TCM focuses on the idea that less can often be more, especially when dealing with delicate health conditions. She explained the concept as “using a small force to move a large weight.”

She told me that my grandfather was an expert in using small amounts of medicine to treat complicated diseases and it is an approach she has adopted too.

The upside of this gentler approach is that it reduces the risk of unwanted side effects, which are more likely with larger doses, especially for those who are weak. A more aggressive treatment can shock the body or the system.

Now, six months later, it’s amazing to me that I’m preparing a microdosing program—a course that seems to embody this very same idea.

Until now, most of my work with psychedelics has focused on high-dose experiences, but over the last few years, both my personal use and the needs of those coming to me have increasingly incorporated lower doses. Even a few months ago, I wrote about not necessarily needing to jump in with a high dose, and two weeks later about different activities that can enhance mini-doses. And now, we come all the way to an offering on microdosing.

Is Microdosing for You?

Microdosing might be right for you if you’re interested in using psychedelics for well-being but have some trepidation or anxiety, or if you're worried about challenging or adverse effects. Microdosing is a lower-risk option compared to full-dose experiences.

It might also appeal if you’re looking for an approach to psychedelic medicine that integrates smoothly into daily life without the time and financial investment of a psychedelic retreat or weekend set aside for a high-dose journey

If you do eventually want to experience higher doses, microdosing can be a great first step to start introducing these substances or medicines to your body. It allows you to get acquainted, build trust with it, and learn your dose tolerance. Many who start microdosing go on to have full-dose experiences, while for many, microdosing is the entire practice, providing subtle yet significant benefits. Whether you move beyond microdoses or stay there is up to you.

If you’ve been reading my newsletter or are interested in exploring psychedelics with this gentle approach, I’m excited to invite you to my newest course, in collaboration with Mushies:
