🍄 what is both big and small?

Hi Reader,

Welcome to the psychonaut's newsletter with musings, ideas, and resources to keep you exploring and growing deeper on the psychedelic path.

🍄 What is both big and small?

Answer: Habits.

Habits can be small things. Little things you do every day.

They can also be big. They change your life.

It might sound hyperbolic, but it’s true.

If you go from an inactive lifestyle to a regular exercise habit, your body will change. It will change your mood and how your brain works too.

If you adopt a daily mindfulness meditation practice, you can learn to manage stress and bring an increased sense of peace to your days.

If you replace a habit of eating processed foods with healthy whole foods, you can improve your physical health, boost your mood, and lower your risk of chronic diseases.

The actions we repeatedly do pave the direction of our lives.

The power of our habits also adds up and compounds over the long term.

As author James Clear illustrates in his bestselling book Atomic Habits, if you get just 1% better at something every day, after one year you are 36 times better. If you get 1% worse every day, then your level goes down to almost zero.

🧠 Psychedelics and Habit Formation

Where do psychedelics come into the equation?

Psychedelics have been shown to increase neuroplasticity.

Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to change and adapt throughout life and includes the formation of new neural connections and the reorganization of neural pathways.

This supports the brain's ability to learn and form new habits, as well as unlearn old ones.

Not only that but there is research that supports the theory that psychedelics also increase neurogenesis: the process by which new neurons (brain cells) are formed.

So when it comes to building new habits, both neurogenesis and neuroplasticity can play a role. Neurogenesis provides the raw material for building new connections and neuroplasticity allows us to make new connections, and reinforce the neural connections associated with the new habits.

When we couple this knowledge of psychedelics’ effects on the brain with lessons and strategies and from habit formation science and psychology, I think there is HUGE potential.

See, I've been a huge habit nerd, for a long time.

So a few weeks ago, when co-creator Jack and I sent out a survey about interest in our upcoming microdosing course, I got excited when I saw the feedback because one of the top things people want to learn about is habit formation and how it works with microdosing.

Honestly, it made me happy and I have totally been indulging this inner geek side of myself putting this part of the course together!

More news on that soon, but on today's topic, I’d like to ask you a few questions for you to consider….

  • Are there any new habits you'd like to cultivate?
  • Are there any habits you'd like to drop?
  • If successful, how might these habits affect your experience of life?

This awareness and intention will be the first step in guiding you forward ✨

🎵Psychedelic Supplements

Discovered this one in session at the weekend. It has electronic beats which isn't to my usual tastes but I really like it. Also the album name 'One Hundred Billion Sparks' is really cool.
