🍄 The rock and the hammer

Hi Reader,

🍄 A story of 1000 swings

“Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.”
– John Quincy Adams

There once was a man trying to break a rock.

He took a hammer to it and started hitting it, over and over and over again. The rock didn't break. But he kept going, hammering away. Hundreds and hundreds of times.

Finally, on his 1000th hammer swing, someone was walking past and saw him hit the rock. With that swing, the rock broke.

The passerby thought, "Wow, one swing and he shattered that rock, amazing!"

What they didn't know or see were the necessary 999 swings before that weakened the rock and made the breakthrough possible.

I heard this story a few years ago and I love it.

For me, it encapsulates two key factors on the path of psychedelic integration: action and patience.

Whatever insights you're working with, whatever directions you're heading in, these principles likely apply.

The process of psychedelic integration is often about taking the steps. Sure, sometimes it's exciting. But sometimes it's boring, or tedious. Sometimes it feel like slogging away at a rock. But we know our deepest insights are worth the work. And what else are we going to do but work towards something better?

Another example comes to mind. Someone I've worked with over the last couple of years started microdosing a couple of years ago. When they began, they went three weeks with no results. But, they kept dosing. Then, on week four – wow, a sudden burst of energy! A big change.

Of course, it's not just about the dosing, though. It's true of integration, working towards better ways of living and being we may have glimpsed or dreamed.

Over to you:

Are you finding yourself frustrated with slow progress? Whether it's a healthier mind, a fitter body, stronger relationships, or starting a creative endeavour.

I have two questions for you:

  1. Are you putting in the reps? Every small effort counts. Are you making even tiny steps towards your goal?
  2. Are you willing to be patient? In this case, patience isn't just about waiting around without action. It's about actively taking steps towards your goal and allowing time for the changes. Can you embrace proactive patience?

When the rock finally shatters, it might catch you by surprise. You might only recognize the change in hindsight, suddenly seeing how far you've come. And in that moment, the journey – with all its frustrations and small victories – reveals its true value.

Keep swinging that hammer, and keep believing. Trust in the process. Your breakthrough might be well on its way.

Do you have any stories or reflections on this? Reaching something after a lot of work and patience?

Press reply and share your answers with me . Always lovely to hear from you :)

A friend passed me some Gamelan music: a unique type of music coming from Bali. Rhythmic and trance-like. Can you recognize its influence in psychedelic soundtracks?
